Probation Services Well Placed For Future

09/07/2010

Probation services in Surrey and Sussex are “well-placed to face the demands of the future,” HM Inspectorate of Probation has found.

Probation services in Surrey and Sussex are "well-placed to face the demands of the future," HM Inspectorate of Probation has found.

Surrey & Sussex Probation Trust (SSPT) was formed on 1 April 2010 following a merger between Surrey Probation Area and Sussex Probation Area. The Offender Management Inspection was conducted in February and March of this year, shortly before the merger.

Inspectors concluded both areas were delivering on their aims of protecting the public, cutting crime and ensuring offenders comply with the terms of their orders. Only minimum or moderate improvements are required, according the inspection report which is publicly at www.justice.gov.uk/inspectorates/hmi-probation/

SSPT Chief Executive Sonia Crozier said: "The inspection took place shortly before the merger and its particularly pleasing that inspectors judged this process had not led to a reduction in the quality of service delivery.

"The public in Surrey and Sussex can be encouraged that the trust is providing a good service in managing offenders and working with our partners to reduce crime and its impact on society."

SSPT manages around 5,700 offenders in Sussex and 2,300 in Surrey. Around a third of those offenders are in custody with the remainder being subject to community orders, suspended sentence orders or post-release licence.
