New Chief Executive
17/11/2011
Nick Smart has been appointed Acting Chief Executive of Surrey & Sussex Probation Trust following the departure of Sonia Crozier.
Sonia, who was Chief Officer of Sussex Probation and subsequently the first Chief Executive of the newly-formed SSPT in April 2010, has left to take up the post of Deputy Chief Executive at London Probation Trust.
She said: "The past three years has not been an easy time for probation, working in an environment of shrinking resource. However my overwhelming memory of SSPT will be of a group of probation staff willing to embrace change whilst holding to our values.
"When I was first appointed in July 2008, I had two key aims: raising our profile with partners and the broader public as part of our contribution to crime reduction and to challenge the tick box culture. I was particularly pleased when SSPT was asked to host the national pilot which gave probation staff more freedom to exercise their professional judgement."
Nick has worked in probation in Sussex since 1994 and was Deputy Chief Executive in the merged Surrey & Sussex Probation Trust. He said: "I am really proud to have the opportunity to lead such a dedicated and high achieving group of staff. My priorities are to continue, with colleagues, to provide a quality service to offenders, victims and the courts and to develop plans that enable the trust to build on our existing strengths to face the challenges ahead."
